Johanna Due Boje's Mazy Klovenhoj Retires from International Sport

Mazy Klovenhoj, the number one horse of Swedish Grand Prix rider Johanna Due Boje, has been retired from international competition sport.

Mazy Klovenhoj is a 16-year old Swedish warmblood mare Mazy Klövenhöj (by Bocelli x National Zenith xx x Record Token xx).

A Danish-Swedish Blend

Mazy is born outside Nyköping, Sweden, bred by Annette Karlsson and Aksel Primdahl (who is Danish). Her dam is the Swedish born steepleracer Manzana xx (by National Zenith xx) and her sire is Bocelli. She is listed as owned by Pernille Primdahl.

Pernille trained her as a young horse, when she was quite inconspicuous. The family wanted to sell her but Pernille's trainer, Camilla Larsson, recommended them to keep her.

Pernille took her up to M-level, but more money was needed to take her to proper FEI level and the family looked for a partnership. A couple of successful riders declined and it was Johanna Due Boje who said yes.

The pair shone at small tour level in Sweden and in 2019 won the Lovsta Future Challenge for Developing Grand Prix horses and placed fifth in the 2019 Swedish Grand Prix Championships.

They debuted internationally at Grand Prix level in May 2019 in Aalborg and competed at international GP level for the next five years. They rode at shows in Flyinge, Doha, Aarhus; Verden, Compiegne, Falsterbo, Troisdorf, Gothenburg, Herning, Aachen and Hagen.

They won silver at the 2020 and 2022 Swedish Dressage Championships. They first represented Sweden on a team in the FEI Nations Cup at the 2022 CDIO Falsterbo.

Their highlight year was 2013. They made it to the World Cup Finals in Omaha, where they finished 8th in the Kur to Music. They skipped the Swedish Championships as the mare was being bred for embryotransfer. In July 2023 they competed on the hallowed grounds of the CDIO Aachen and were selected on the Swedish team for the 2023 European Championships in Riesenbeck, where they performed below par and were 59th in the Grand Prix (65.978%).

They only did once CDI in 2024: in Hagen and could not achieve their usual scoring level. They did not ride at the 2024 Nationals.

Retirement from International Sport

Mazy has now been retired from international competition sport.

"I haven’t competed Mazy as intensely as last year," Johanna explained. "This is a choice I’ve made based on many different feelings but the one that weights the most is the feeling that I want her to feel totally comfortable during training and competition. Therefore I’ve come to the hard decision to leave our international career behind. She has given me so much and I owe her the world- and most of all I owe her to stop when she gives me the signs to do so."

Mazy has moved back home to Pernille Primdahl for the family to enjoy.

"I’m forever grateful to her owners/breeders, who have been the best team and support behind us I could ever wish for. For a breeder/owner to keep a horse like this in the sport for me isn’t something I take for granted, and I’m just so thankful for everything we’ve experienced together over the years. Our agreement the whole time has been with Mazy's best in mind, and that’s what we will stick to. I'm so happy that she will share some wonderful years together with her owner Pernille now, just as they did the 8 years before she came to me."
