The 2023 Spanish Dressage Championships kick off this week at Las Cadenas with one top combination absent from the line-up: 2022 World Championship Spanish team pair Alejandro Sanchez del Barco and Quincallo de Indalo.
Quincallo de Indalo, a 12-year old PRE stallion by Esbelto VII x Bandolero LXVII, is not fit to compete.
Shooting Stars
Sanchez del Barco trained the grey stallion from novice level up to Grand Prix.
Their international show debut was in the 5-year old classes at the 2016 CDI Jerez de la Fronero, followed by Segovia. Two years later they returned in the 7-year old division at the CDI Segovia, while in 2019 they competed at small tour level.
After three years absence from the CDI ring, the duo made its international Grand Prix debut in March 2022 in Jerez, scoring 68.543% and as of them never scored under 70%. At the CDIO Aachen they clinched a team spot after scoring 71.574% in the Special and at the 2022 World Championships in Herning they were the second highest placing Spanish pair with a 71.574% in the Special, the same score as in Aachen.
Riesenbeck Team Contenders
Sanchez and Quincallo kicked off the 2023 show season with a double victory at the 2023 CDI Jerez, posting 73.413% in the Grand Prix. They were heading to the 2023 Spanish Championships - the first Spanish team selection trial for the 2023 European Championships in Riesenbeck - as one of favourites.
Unfortunately the rider announced Quincallo's withdrawal.
"Sadly an accident in the paddock whilst enjoying his free-time, where all our horses including the stallions spend long days, has prevented our star pair from competing in the most important event nationally," Quincallo's owner, Yeguada de Indalo communicated. "We're sure Quincallo de Indalo will recover soon from this accident."
Sanchez del Barco and Quincallo were the bronze medal winners at last year's Nationals. The second Spanish team selection trial will be at the CDIO Aachen the first weekend of July.
