Spanish young professional Sergio Moron Basoco has retired his career-starting horse, Farnham L, from sport.

Farnham L is a 15-year old Danish warmblood gelding by Fürst Rousseau out of Hotney L (by Hochadel x Welt As). He is bred by Karsten Bundgaard in Denmark

Career Starter

The chestnut was acquired by the Moron family at Helgstrand Dressage in 2017 for 15-year old Sergio to ride. The 6-year old chestnut became Sergio's career starting horse as he represented Spain at seven consecutive European Youth Championships.

Their international show career started in March 2018 in Toledo at junior level. Coached by Lauro Aguilo, the pair won silver at the 2018 Spanish junior championships and were nominated on the team for the European Championships in Fontainebleau where they were 10th in the Kur finals.

In 2019 it was back to silver at the Nationals, while at the Europeans in San Giovanni they stranded in 21st place in the individual test.

They moved to Young Riders level in 2020 and were 29th in the individual test at the Europeans in Pilisjaszfalu. They got bronze at the Spanish Young Riders Championships.

Their career highlight gear came in 2021. After showing at the CDI's in Le Mans, Compiegne and Hagen, they headed to the European Young Riders Championships on home turf in Oliva Nova, Spain, where they fourth in the individual and freestyle test. They won their first gold medal at the Nationals.

In 2022 they did their last year at Young Riders level with starts in Le Mans, Compiegne, Hagen, and Aachen. At the latter show they won the Kur. At the 2022 European Championships in Hartpury, they were 31st in the individual test as Farnham was spooky in both tests. They won gold again at the Nationals.

From Juniors to Grand Prix

In 2023 Sergio decided to move to the United Kingdom for immersive training with Olympian Carl Hester while continuing online university studies.

They moved up to Under 25 Grand Prix level that year and debuted at that level iN Addington in March 2023 and won the Short Grand Prix. They scored a double win at the CDI Hickstead before heading to the European Under 25 Championships in Pilisjaszfalu, where they were 27th in the Short Grand Prix. They travelled back home to Spain to compete in the National championships for silver.

Their last competition year as a pair was in 2024. After Addington and Hickstead they went to the 2024 European Under 25 Championships in St. Margarethen, where they made it into the freestyle final for a 17th place. He returned to Spain for a third career gold medal at the Nationals.

Retirement

St. Margarethen turned out to be the last show for Farnham. After a very busy and extensive show career, the now 15-year old sustained an injury and has been retired from sport.

At the 2021 CDIO-YR Aachen
Sergio will continue his competition career with a string of young horses which he purchased in Denmark over the years.

"Seems like yesterday when it all started... We were both very different. You at 6 years old and your temper, and me at 15 years old and no experience. But little by little you were earning my trust, and without me realizing it, you became everything I needed," said Sergio. "Today your chapter as an athlete ends, but a new life begins, peaceful and surrounded by the affection of all of us who have been lucky enough to experience this with you."

He continued, "All I am today I owe to you. How lucky am I to have found you. This stage by your side I will carry with me all my life. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement."
